The Department of Pediatrics, Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital, Bareilly, successfully organized an academic Debate Competition on the thought-provoking topic “NIS vs IAP Schedule – Which is Ideal for India?” to mark the beginning of World Immunization Week – 2026. The event aimed to promote awareness regarding immunization practices, encourage evidence-based discussions, and enhance academic participation among postgraduate residents.
The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Neetu Gautam Professor who welcomed all the faculties and the postgraduate students and highlighted upon the various activities to be conducted throughout the week and an address by Dr. Preeti Lata Rai, Professor & Head, Department of Pediatrics, who highlighted the significance of vaccination in child survival and public health. She emphasized that World Immunization Week serves as an important reminder of the collective responsibility of healthcare professionals in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases.
First-year postgraduate residents enthusiastically participated in the debate and presented well-researched arguments both in favor of the National Immunization Schedule (NIS) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Immunization Schedule. Participants discussed various aspects including accessibility, affordability, evidence-based recommendations, disease burden, feasibility, public health priorities, and the practical challenges of implementation in the Indian scenario.
The debate witnessed active interaction, healthy academic exchange, and critical appraisal of both schedules. The residents demonstrated commendable confidence, communication skills, and updated knowledge on current immunization strategies.
Faculty members of the Department of Pediatrics served as judges and appreciated the efforts of all participants. The competition concluded with the announcement of winners and distribution of certificates. The judges encouraged residents to continue engaging in such academic discussions that bridge clinical practice with public health policy.
The event was highly informative and inspiring, successfully setting the tone for World Immunization Week – 2026 celebrations. It reinforced the message that while schedules may differ, the ultimate goal remains universal immunization coverage and protection of every child.
