Bareilly, August 1: The Department of Pediatrics, Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital (RMCH), inaugurated World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with great enthusiasm and commitment towards promoting optimal infant and young child feeding practices. The event also witnessed the inauguration of the newly established “Hirkani Kaksh” (Breastfeeding Room), a dedicated space created to provide privacy and comfort for breastfeeding mothers within the hospital.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. Lata Agrawal, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, as the Chief Guest, in the esteemed presence of the Principal and other distinguished faculty members. Addressing the gathering, She emphasized that breastfeeding is the cornerstone of child survival, growth, and development. She highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments that enable every mother to breastfeed successfully.
The programme was organized by the Department of Pediatrics under the able guidance of Professor & Head, Dr. Preeti Lata Rai, who spoke about the significance of World Breastfeeding Week and reiterated the need for collective efforts to strengthen breastfeeding support systems in hospitals and communities. She emphasized that early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months remain among the most effective interventions to reduce infant morbidity and mortality.
The event was successfully coordinated by Organising Secretary Dr. Ravish,Dr Somesh Gangwar with active support from the resident doctors Dr. Abhishek Bansal and Dr. Dara Singh, who played a key role in planning and conducting the inaugural programme.
Faculty members, postgraduate students, interns, nursing staff, and hospital personnel participated enthusiastically in the event. The inauguration marked the beginning of a week-long series of awareness activities aimed at educating mothers, families, healthcare workers, and the community about the importance of breastfeeding and maternal support.
The Department of Pediatrics reaffirmed its commitment to promoting, protecting, and supporting breastfeeding through continuous education, awareness, and evidence-based healthcare practices, in line with the objectives of World Breastfeeding Week.
