The Department of Paediatrics, Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital, Bareilly, observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with a week-long series of academic, awareness, and community activities. The programme aligned with the global theme and aimed to promote breastfeeding, strengthen counselling skills, and support optimal infant and young child feeding practices.
Key Objectives
- Raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding for maternal and child health
- Promote early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months
- Sensitize healthcare workers and students on effective breastfeeding counselling
- Engage residents and nursing students through educational and creative activities
- Provide structured counselling to mothers in OPD and strengthen community support

Highlights
- Hirkani Kaksh Inaugurated: A dedicated breastfeeding facility to support mothers in a comfortable, private environment.
- Creative Engagement: Reels, skit, and slogan competitions helped convey breastfeeding messages in relatable ways.
- Academic Learning: PG Quiz fostered interdisciplinary knowledge among Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Community Medicine residents.
- Community Outreach: Awareness talk at PHC Rithora focused on practical counselling for mothers.
- Daily Counselling in OPD: Mothers were assessed and given structured counselling on early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding, correct latch, and managing difficulties.
Outcome & Conclusion
The week successfully strengthened awareness, academic learning, and community engagement around breastfeeding. The inauguration of Hirkani Kaksh reaffirmed the department’s commitment to a mother-friendly healthcare environment.
The Department of Paediatrics reiterated its resolve to continue promotion, counselling, documentation, and community outreach beyond World Breastfeeding Week, reinforcing breastfeeding as a key investment in the health of mothers, children, and future generations.
