Introduction

World Heart Day is observed every year on 29 September to create awareness about cardiovascular health. The 2026 programme at Rohilkhand College of Nursing under the guidance of Dr. Priyanka A Masih, Principal RCN & Dr. Anita P, Vice Principal, RCN focused on the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat,” highlighting prevention, recognition of cardiovascular risk factors, healthy lifestyle practices, heart-healthy nutrition and timely health-seeking behaviour.

The programme was planned by Mrs. Akanksha Ellen Emmanuel, Associate Professor, as a health-education activity for nursing students reinforcing the role of nurses in health promotion, prevention, screening, counselling and community education.

 Objectives

    • Create awareness about cardiovascular diseases and the importance of heart health.
    • Explain the significance of “Don’t Miss a Beat” in everyday life.
    • Identify modifiable and non-modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.
    • Promote healthy lifestyle practices for cardiovascular disease prevention.
    • Educate participants about healthy heart dietary management.
    • Encourage awareness of blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and healthy body weight.
    • Emphasize recognition of concerning cardiovascular symptoms and timely medical care.
    • Strengthen the role of nursing students as health educators and advocates.

Theme: “DON’T MISS A BEAT”

The theme was presented as a call to pay attention to the heart—its health, its risk factors and its warning signs. Participants were encouraged not to overlook unhealthy habits or concerning symptoms.

    • RECOGNISE: Know cardiovascular warning signs and understand when urgent medical attention may be required.
    • PREVENT: Adopt healthy eating, regular physical activity, tobacco avoidance, adequate sleep and healthy stress management.
    • ACT: Know and manage risk factors, attend appropriate health checks and seek timely professional care.

Major Activities / Highlights

    • Awareness session on World Heart Day and the “Don’t Miss a Beat” theme.
    • Interactive discussion on cardiovascular disease and preventable risk factors.
    • Health education on healthy heart habits and lifestyle modification.
    • Discussion on heart-healthy dietary management and practical food choices.
    • Awareness of blood pressure and other cardiovascular health indicators.
    • Interactive question-and-answer session for students.
    • Take-away commitment encouraging participants to adopt positive heart-health practices.

Role of Nursing Students in Heart Health Promotion

    • Provide accurate health education about cardiovascular disease prevention.
    • Promote healthy lifestyle practices through individual and community teaching.
    • Support appropriate measurement and documentation of blood pressure and other health indicators.
    • Identify individuals who may require further assessment and referral.
    • Educate families about warning signs and timely health-seeking behaviour.
    • Support adherence to prescribed treatment and follow-up for people with established cardiovascular disease.
    • Provide practical, culturally appropriate dietary and lifestyle advice.

Outcomes of the Programme

    • Participants gained increased awareness of cardiovascular disease and its major risk factors.
    • Participants understood the message of “Don’t Miss a Beat” and the importance of timely action.
    • Participants identified healthy lifestyle behaviours that can support heart health.
    • Participants gained practical knowledge of heart-healthy dietary choices and food substitutions.
    • Nursing students strengthened their role as health educators and advocates for preventive care.
    • The programme encouraged practical, sustainable heart-health changes in daily life.

Conclusion

The World Heart Day 2026 programme at Rohilkhand College of Nursing served as a health-promotion initiative to strengthen awareness regarding cardiovascular health. Through “Don’t Miss a Beat,” participants were encouraged to recognise risk factors, develop healthy habits, make heart-friendly food choices and respond promptly to concerning symptoms. The programme reinforced the importance of prevention, early recognition and appropriate management for healthier individuals and communities.
